Counselling for Family Estrangement
Understanding Family and Relationship Pain
Welcome, and thank you for being here. If you are reading these words, you might be struggling with how to navigate confusing and painful relationships with family members. Experiencing conflict with family and loved ones can feel incredibly burdensome and lonely.
I know that you long to be seen, accepted, and understood by your family, even when those relationships are strained or harmful. There can be an immense grief in realizing your family may never give you what you needed or hoped for. That grief is real, it deserves care, and it's welcome here.
How Counselling Can Help
Therapy offers a safe space for greater understanding of the pain and confusion you're experiencing. Factors like intergenerational trauma, unprocessed grief in family systems, and unresolved hurt can make families incredibly complex.
One of the most painful things about being part of a family system with poor communication, patterns of manipulation, or emotional withdrawal is the chronic shame, abandonment and overwhelming sadness you might carry. Counselling can help you make sense of these painful patterns, identify and feel your natural emotions that might include anger, sadness, grief, and begin to tap into your inner resilience and wisdom.
Working from an Internal Family Systems (IFS)–informed and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) perspective, we can care for the inner parts of you shaped by these relationships, and help you build boundaries that protect your peace without hardening your heart.
The overthinking that comes with it…
Estrangement often brings looping thoughts: replaying conversations, rehearsing confrontations, second-guessing your decision. If your mind gets stuck in these cycles, my special focus in anxiety and intrusive thoughts can help us work with the loops directly.
You deserve support
Whether you're estranged, considering distance (from a family member), or trying to repair — you don't have to figure this out alone.
